Solution: Reduce the Ackerman setting by moving the tie rods to the outer mounting holes on the stub axles.

Hi David, when do you choose to either reduce ackerman or take some caster out or move front wheels in to reduce some bite?

Moving front end spacers is only a minute change, so that would be to fine tune the kart, rather than giving it an overhaul.
If you are experiencing quite bad front end under/oversteer, then ackerman would be something to look at to improve the situation.
Castor would relate to how much the inside wheel is lifting, and also how much tyre is on the circuit under lock.

Thanks David that makes sense. I was intereted in your thoughts on the topic. The situation we had was that the kart was good and was one of the fastest in the group but i knew there was more left in it but the kart showed no signs of any real handeling problems so I assumed that maybe there was too much overall grip and the kart wouldn't suffer from trying to free it up a little. So I moved the wheels in at the front 10mm per side to the min width and went beyond neutral caster to one notch forward towards negative. Overall we gained about 3 tenths. Was this the right way to achieve this loosening up of the kart or would you have started in a different direction?

Mark,
Normally when the kart feels 'too good' it generally has too much all round grip. Obviously there are times when this is perfect, but generally on practice day, your kart should be a little slippery.
By narrowing front track, this will help with initial steer into a corner, but you will need to provide more steering lock mid way through the turn.

Dave,
Would you need to have the Castor right for the Front Track to work effectively? and do you go on the basis that front track (when castor is correct) is more about the entry steer into the corner?
Also regarding Camber.. what tuning situation are you changing this... for u/steer coming off the turn?
Cheers

Hi, Dave, I have an X1E (soon to be X3) and I can't seem to get the kart to work unless i go to extremes. 80mm front hubs with 15mm, double minimum front castor (two adjustors) -2mm camber and 2 toe out. hard axle, 1393 track, 90mm hubs. 2 bearings, seat stays. front clamp in. i've tried more 'nuetral set ups at the advice of respected veterans and to no avail. seat is 25/200/80. I am wondering what to do because being at such limits on the front i feel i have nowhere left to go to improve the kart. is it perhaps that my seat is too far back requiring this front end set up to work? is my chassis just too old and worn out? please help!
